The Sunday Bag

I was photographed for the latest issue of Free & Easy, a Japanese “trad” magazine. The cover story is devoted to Allen Edmonds, so they asked me to pose in my AE loafers. They insisted that I carry a bag for visual interest, and my white Fred Perry tennis bag was deemed a bit overpowering. We settled on my new Sunday bag, which is a blast from the past if ever there was one.

I found it on eBay for next to nothing. When it arrived, it turned out to be a pretty impressive hunk of vinyl. First off, I was shocked to find the Wilson sales tag still on it, which looked like it was from the early ’70s at the latest. It also suggested that it was made in Scotland:

The attention to detail is impressive, consider the man-made material. The green is rendered in pebble grain, the Wilson crest is stitched onto the side, and the zippers come with little fob-like tabs.

I get complimented on it regularly, since it’s obviously a far cry from the cheap black dreck that fills most golf retailers. The bag section at my local GolfSmith looks like the luggage department at Wal-Mart.
